The Wheel turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Now, at the end of the Third Age, the Pattern stirs violently. On November 11, 1000 NE, at the hidden battlefield of Shadar Logoth, the taint was cleansed from Saidin. For the first time in thousands of years, male channelers can touch the One Power without inevitable madness.


Yet the world is about to enter the darkest period of the Third Age. Kingdoms fracture. The Seanchan tighten their grip across the western lands. The White Tower struggles to regain its authority. The Black Tower rises, a new power among the ruins of the old.


Of every thousand born, only about 1% possess the ability to channel. Of these, perhaps one in 10,000 is strong enough to be noticed, trained, and feared.
